The Chaotics

"Give me that ole time rock'n roll"

LOST IN THE 50'S WITH THE CHAOTICS

In 1957 four guys formed one of Tallahassee's first Rock'n Roll bands.  The members were Fred Andrews, Jim Reichert, Bill Moon and Mack Wright.  They called themselves the Flambeaus.  Later that same year a female vocalist named Lisa Poag was asked to join the group.  In 1959, the group reorganized as the casuals.  A young drummer named Mark Ellerbee became the newest member.  The group performed two nights weekly at a night spot in Thomasville, Ga. known as Pal's Supper Club.  That same year Fred dropped out of the group and a singer/bass player, Bob Carnes and a guitar player, Paul Messer were added.

In 1960 "The Casuals" performed over the Tri-State area in High Schools and Colleges.  Later that year a conflict arose over the bands name and so later they became "The Chaotics".   In 1962 Lissa (Poag) Moon left the group to start a family.  Piano player Mack wright dropped out to pursue a different career.  Saxophone player Ned Hafner was recruited and sometime later Bob Carnes rejoined the band.  Singer Sam Boykin and bass player Bob Kerce became the newest members of The Chaotics.

The Chaotics were known throughout the South as one of the top bands.  Bob Kerce left the band and moved to South Florida and Denny Flandreau took his place as the bass player.  During 1963 and 1964, many attempts were made by the group to "make it big" with their own style of music.  Unfortunately their attempts were unsuccessful.  However, that did not stop the band from being very successful as a regional cover band.  They performed at the Leon County Fairgrounds to capacity crowds on a regular basis.

Other successful venues were Highway 90 East, called "The Barn" and no one can forget "The Clover Club" on North Monroe in Tallahassee.  In 1966 Sam Boykin left the band for sunny California and Fred Andrews was recruited once again to join the band.  Mark Ellerbee left for the Army and Vietnam, while Denny Philanderer departed for South Florida.

A new drummer, Paul Knowles, was hired to replace Mark and Bill Moon switched from guitar to bass.  Once again, the band made the adjustments and kept playing and performing as they did for the past fifteen years.  Fred Andrews later left the band for the second time.  "The Chaotics" opened and played at a new location in Tallahassee called "The Tiki Hut".  In 1968 the band stopped playing for a long period for personal reasons.  Following this, most of the members continued to play music within the community.

On February 3, 1990 the band regrouped by popular demand from all their Tallahassee fans.  They sold out the National Guard Armory in Tallahassee.  The reunion was so successful and there were so many request that they decided to do it again.

On February 9, 1991 "The Chaotics" had another band reunion at the Leon County Civic Center.  As was expected they had another sold out crowd and the performance was overwhelming successful.

Why "The Chaotics"?  There have been many bands in Tallahassee over the past fifty years but not one like "The Chaotics".  They are one of the most successful band in Tallahassee and they have out lasted all the others.  Overall, The Chaotics are know for versatility, showmanship, quality vocals and their professional demeanor.  They are absolutely the first band to draw crowds in excess of five hundred and more at locations like the Fair Grounds and Tallahassee Civic Center.  This has contributed to their widespread popularity over the Tri-state area.  The band had performances in night clubs before alcohol could be served.  Other venues included shopping center openings, store openings, open house events, street dances, night clubs, high school proms, sorority and fraternity parties, Florida State home coming parties, country clubs, civic club functions, Pine Tree, Sea Food and Watermelon Festivals and much more.

Early in 2008 the band regrouped with some old and new members.  Heading up the band is Bill Moon, lead guitar, along with Lissa Moon, vocals and Fred Andrews, vocals.  New members are Sonny Cowart, drums; Joe Caudell, bass.
